Carnival Corp has begun construction on its first cruise terminal in Japan.
The new cruise terminal in Sasebo is expected to open next summer.
Carnival will build and operate the terminal under a 20-year agreement and gets priority berthing at the facility.
‘This new terminal will complement our strong presence in the Asia-Pacific region and furthers our commitment to help facilitate the rising demand for cruise vacations in the region,” said Michael Thamm, CEO of Carnival Asia.
Thamm said other port development projects in Asia could follow and Carnival will continue to work with the Japan government to identify new cruise port opportunities.
Seven Carnival Corp. brands currently serve Japan – Cunard, Holland America Line, P&O Cruises, AIDA Cruises, Costa Cruises, Princess Cruises and Seabourn.
Carnival expects up to two million passenger movements in the region in 2019.
