Taking to Instagram, Baekhyun says that he regrets his choice of words as he just wants to comfort and cheer up a depressed fan.
EXO's Baekhyun has come under fire for his choice of words regarding depression and has issued an apology for that. The controversy first started after Baekhyun told a fan who suffers from depression to stop taking her medication during the group's fansign event on December 30.
In a now-deleted fan-captured video, the singer could be heard saying, "It seems that there are those who are experiencing depression as well. If I were to voice my thoughts, I don't know why people become ill with depression and insomnia." He added, "I'm not criticizing it. I know you can't force yourself to only think good thought, but there are good people around you. You have friends, and you have me and the members."
The clip immediately went viral and many people took to social media to slam the South Korean heartthrob. However, the fan in question soon posted multiple statements regarding the conversation, clarifying that she personally had been very comforted and encouraged by what he said to her.
The singer himself shared on Instagram on January 2 a lengthy message to apologize for what he said during the event. "I am writing this post because I wish to personally apologize for my comments from the fan sign event on December 30," he began.
He went on saying that he also felt a lot of fear towards the topic of depression. Thus, when the fan told him about her depression, he became "really worried and suddenly afraid. At a fansign that should be filled with joy, I really felt the gravity of what she, a fan that I wanted to make happy, was confiding to me."
"I wanted to tell her at least one more word of comfort," he continued. "And I wanted to do quickly just do anything for her [during the event] at the thought that my words could maybe become a source of strength to her, since she had said she liked me."
Baekhyun then said that he regretted his action because he just wanted to comfort and cheer up the fan, saying that there were good people like EXO by her side when she felt depressed. He also admitted that he didn't have the ability to "organize and express my intentions in a short period of time."
"I'm afraid even while writing this that I might have made a mistake again in this post," he concluded. "However, I want to sincerely apologize. I'm sorry to that fan, and I wish to apologize to everyone who felt hurt due to this matter. I will become a 'Baekhyun' who is more prudent about his words and actions moving forward."
