A new audition tape has leaked, adding fuel to rumors that Marvel is looking to cast one of Peter Parker's love interests for the 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' sequel.
Will Gwen Stacy appear in "Spider-Man: Homecoming 2"? A new audition tape which has leaked online further hints that Marvel is looking to cast one of Peter Parker's love interests in the sequel to Jon Watts' "Spider-Man: Homecoming", which was released last summer.
Obtained by Omega Underground, the video featured German actress Iris Haller reading for the part of Gwen Stacy. It's unclear, however, if the studio is going to have the MCU version of Gwen Stacy switched from all-American blonde to a foreign exchange student from Europe.
This is the second time a Gwen Stacy audition tape has leaked online. Just a week ago, an audition tape made its way on the internet featuring a French actress named Louna auditioning for the role of the classmate and lab partner of the web-crawling superhero.
Gwen Stacy was first introduced in "The Amazing Spider-Man" #31 in 1965. A long-term romantic interest for Peter Parker before she was murdered by the Green Goblin (Norman Osborn), the character has been portrayed by Bryce Dallas Howard in 2007's "Spider-Man 3" and by Emma Stone in 2012's "The Amazing Spider-Man" and its sequel "The Amazing Spider-Man 2".
There's no exact detail on whether Marvel will include Gwen Stacy, who is described as a college student in the comics, with a twist. But the studio seemingly has been trying to deliver plot twists with its new "Spider-Man" franchise, most notably with the casting of Zendaya Coleman as MJ, although she's not the Mary Jane whom fans have known from the comics. Despite sharing the same nickname, Zendaya's MJ is a new character named Michelle, who is Tom Holland's Peter's nerdy classmate in his high school.
It's also unclear if Zendaya's MJ will be romantically involved with Peter at some point in the new film franchise or Marvel will set up a love triangle storyline by adding Gwen into the fold. In the comics, both Gwen and MJ are vying for Peter's heart.
The "Spider-Man: Homecoming" sequel is set for a July 5, 2019 release in U.S. theaters, with filming reportedly set to begin in June in Atlanta. Tom Holland will return as the titular superhero, while Jon Watts will once again serve behind the lens.
